Induction Ceremonies on November 18
Former Rice standout Courtney Hall, who broke into the Owls starting lineup at center as a 17-year old freshman and went on to earn All-Southwest Conference honors and play for eight years in the NFL, is one of nine new members of the 2019 Southwest Conference Hall of Fame induction class.
Hall joins Jeff King (Arkansas baseball), Mark Adickes (Baylor football), Leroy Burrell (Houston track and field), Gary Hammond (SMU football), Tony Brackens (Texas football), Chalisa (Lisa) Branch (Texas A&M basketball), Charlie Davis (TCU football) and James Gray (Texas Tech football) as the newest members of the Hall. The will be formally inducted on November 18 at the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Brown-Lupton University Union on the TCU campus in Ft. Worth.
Hall reported to Rice for his first training camp in 1985, weeks shy of his 17th birthday. Despite being only 6-1 and 220 pounds, he took over as the Owls starting center when they opened the season at home against the University of Miami, and remained the starting center for the next four seasons. He blossomed into a two-time, All-SWC selection and won the American Spirit Award, which recognized the SWC senior football player who combined academic excellence, good sportsmanship and citizenship, high moral character, and outstanding athletic ability.
He was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the second round of the 1989 NFL Draft and went on to play with them through 1997. He was a four-time Pro Bowl 1st Alternate and a team captain as the Chargers won their first AFC title in 1995 and advanced to their first Super Bowl in team history (XXIX). He was inducted into the Rice Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995.
After completing his playing career, he earned a combined JD/MBA from the University of Chicago and embarked on a business career in New York City. He currently serves as the Managing Director of Hillcrest Venture Partners, which he co-founded. He served as a Bloomberg Mayoral Appointee to the New York City Campaign Finance Board and currently serves as the Bloomberg Mayoral Appointee to the Board of Trustees of the Randall's Island Park Alliance. He previously served on the Investment Committee for Rice University, which is responsible for managing the university's $6.5 Billion endowment.
The Southwest Conference Hall of Fame is one of four separate halls of fame housed within the Texas Sports Hall of Fame's physical structure. They include the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame, the Texas Tennis Hall of Fame, the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and now, the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame.
